Folate (Folic Acid)
Folic Acid is essential for several bodily functions — the production of healthy red blood cells, for example. Leafy vegetables are a principal dietary source, although most of us get it primarily from fortified cereals and bread.
Sufficient folic acid intake is critical for pregnant women to prevent neural tube defects in developing embryos. It is also essential for ensuring fertility. Furthermore, it can relieve hot flashes in postmenopausal women, and may also be helpful in preventing heart disease. Folic acid has been used to help treat skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.
Glucosamine is a sugar produced in the body. It is best known for preventing and reversing joint damage related to osteoarthritis. It plays a very important role in maintaining cartilage in the body, the gel-like material that cushions joints, and is found to speed the healing of soft tissue injuries as well.
Although some foods contain small amounts of Glucosamine, there is no readily available source. As a result, supplements in the form of tablets, capsules, creams and injections have become widely available. Injections are recommended because they ensure maximum absorption. Some of Glucosamine’s uses include:
- Relief of osteoarthritis-related pain, stiffness and swelling
- Slow and possibly halt osteoarthritis-related damage to joints
- Speed healing of strains and sprains
- Control back pain
- Promotion of healthy aging
Results will take anywhere from three to eight weeks, with the shots given weekly.
Glucosamine’s effectiveness may be improved by taking it along with an oral supplement such as chondroitin sulfate, another compound which may affect cartilage. Glucosamine supplements can safely be combined with conventional pain relievers such as acetaminophen and aspirin.
Like other B complex vitamins, thiamine is considered an “anti-stress” vitamin because it may strengthen the immune system and improve the body’s ability to withstand stressful conditions. It is named B1 because it was the first B vitamin discovered.
Thiamine deficiency is rare, but can occur in people who get most of their calories from sugar or alcohol. People with thiamine deficiency have difficulty digesting carbohydrates. As a result, a substance called pyruvic acid builds up in their bloodstream, causing a loss of mental alertness, difficulty breathing, and heart damage (a disease known as beriberi).
Some preliminary evidence suggests that thiamine — along with other nutrients — may lower risk of getting cataracts.
